If we had believed in the idea of the “perfect loudspeaker,” our work might have ended in 2003. Since that year, we introduced the TIDAL Sunray. Looking back, it represented a remarkable convergence of ideas, technologies, and craftsmanship. It was the world’s first loudspeaker to feature a 30 mm diamond tweeter, combined with four symmetrically arranged bass drivers operating in a push-push configuration and precisely aligned around a centrally positioned high-midrange driver. Its crossover network incorporated pure silver capacitors, while countless refinements—many visible, many hidden—were developed with a single purpose: to bring recorded music closer to its original event.

 

The response exceeded our expectations. Demonstrations around the world, critical acclaim, industry awards, and most importantly, the enthusiasm of music lovers established the Sunray as one of TIDAL’s defining creations. Ten years later, we introduced the Sunray G2. New cabinet materials, newly developed drivers, an entirely revised crossover network, and countless structural improvements elevated the design further.
Yet despite its success, a question remained: What happens when you begin again? Not with the intention of replacing something great, but with the freedom to challenge every assumption that led to it. That question became the starting point for La Assoluta.

 

Names are often assigned once a project is complete. In this case, the name became part of the project’s foundation. It provided a direction rather than a destination. We set out to explore what could happen when every discipline involved in loudspeaker design - acoustics, mechanics, materials science, manufacturing, and aesthetics - was allowed to evolve without compromise. The name itself carries a certain significance. Maria Callas was famously known as “Primadonna Assoluta,” a title reflecting artistic mastery. We found inspiration in that distinction and believed excellence emerges from the relentless pursuit of a higher standard.

 

From the beginning, we knew the project would require patience. We were presented with two opposing forces. On one side stood the freedom of a clean-sheet design, allowing entirely new solutions and technologies. On the other stood a design language and philosophy that had become inseparable from TIDAL itself. The result had to remain unmistakably TIDAL. Not because tradition demands repetition, but because certain principles remain valid regardless of time. The sculptural, monolithic form language that defines our loudspeakers was never conceived as a stylistic exercise. It was created to achieve visual permanence—a design that remains as relevant decades from now as it is today. Very early in development, we arrived at a fundamental architectural decision. The loudspeaker would employ a symmetrical dual-driver array around a centrally positioned tweeter. Yet this immediately presented a challenge.

While such arrangements are widely used throughout the industry, we had never been fully satisfied with their sonic results. Whether implemented as traditional D’Appolito systems or simplified variations, they often introduced compromises in integration, coherence, and timing that conflicted with our objectives. Solving this problem required an entirely new crossover philosophy. Developing that solution became one of the defining engineering challenges of the project—and ultimately one of its greatest achievements. The architecture was established. The real journey, however, was only beginning. To create something genuinely different, we needed to challenge one of the most fundamental limitations in loudspeaker design: the diaphragm itself.

The result became the heart of La Assoluta. The world’s first pure diamond diaphragm midrange-woofer. And by diamond, we mean exactly that. Not a coating. Not a composite. Not a diaphragm infused with diamond particles for marketing purposes. A genuine diamond diaphragm manufactured entirely from one of the most extraordinary materials known to science. Each loudspeaker contains 27 carats of diamond. A stereo pair contains 54. Yet the significance of the driver lies not in its rarity, but in its capability. This development was realized in close partnership with Accuton, our long-standing driver technology partner for more than thirteen years. Together, we asked a simple question: if diamond is one of the most promising diaphragm materials available, why has its application remained so limited? The answer was excursion. Traditional diamond diaphragms offered exceptional stiffness and low resonance characteristics but were unable to operate with the displacement required of a true midrange-woofer. La Assoluta changed that.

 

Its diamond driver is capable of 7 mm of linear excursion - approximately ten times greater than any comparable diamond diaphragm before it. For the first time, diamond could be employed not merely as a specialized high-frequency solution, but as a genuine broadband transducer operating from approximately 150 Hz upward. This fundamentally expands the role of diamond within loudspeaker design. The material’s extreme rigidity allows the diaphragm to behave as an ideal piston across its operating range, dramatically reducing the resonant behaviour and structural flex that inevitably affect softer materials. Equally important is diamond’s extraordinary thermal conductivity, allowing heat generated within the motor system to be dissipated with exceptional efficiency. The result is not only lower distortion, but also greater consistency under demanding dynamic conditions.

 

The voice coil remains cooler, compression is reduced, and performance remains stable even at substantial output levels. To support a driver unlike any other, every surrounding element required the same level of attention. The basket itself is machined from a solid block of aluminium and engineered specifically for the mechanical demands of this design. Both diamond drivers are mounted within an 18-kilogram front assembly manufactured from a specialized stainless-steel alloy incorporating extensive resonance-control machining and damping techniques. The titanium-to-diamond voice-coil assembly was developed to achieve exceptional rigidity while minimizing stored energy and mechanical flex. Every driver within the system was designed with precisely aligned acoustic centres, ensuring temporal coherence throughout the entire frequency range. Looking back, La Assoluta was never defined by any single innovation.

 

The diamond drivers may represent its most visible achievement, but they are ultimately only one expression of a much broader ambition. Every decision - from the acoustic architecture and crossover topology to the cabinet construction, material selection, and mechanical engineering—was guided by the same question: How much of the remaining distance between a musical performance and its reproduction can be removed? Whether that question can ever be answered completely remains uncertain. What matters is the willingness to continue asking it. In that sense, La Assoluta was never intended as a final statement. It was conceived as a milestone in an ongoing pursuit - one that continues to define TIDAL to this day.
